Can This Old Dog Learn New Tricks?

Published by Kevin under learning,photography

Like most professions, you must continue to learn in order to stay up with the market and remain viable. So this photographer is hitting the books, sort of. I will be attending the Texas School of Photography all next week. The school is sponsored by Texas Professional Photographer’s Association, which I am a member. The TPPA is affiliated with Professional Photographer’s Association, which I am also a member. These organizations seek to increase it’s members business knowledge as well as educating them. I have found my memberships in these associations very valuable and a great wealth of resources in the subject of photography and running a studio. Thanks PPA & TPPA!

So I am heading back to school to attend the “A Week With Dave Newman: Portrait Essentials” course. I wanted to refresh my skills in the essentials of portraiture. My instructor is Dave Newman, a well know author and portrait artist. We will have classroom lectures, instructor demonstrations and models to practice our learning throughout the week, testing out new techniques in posing and lighting. I hear that he is a blast and I am looking forward to getting some new ideas and sharpening the tool.

So you might be asking yourself, “Why is he doing this? Doesn’t he already know how to do this?” Of course I do but I am the curious George type. I like to learn more about my craft, gain new insights and techniques in making better portraits for YOU, my customer! I plan to share my new knowledge by providing you with the best photographs of you and your loved ones. I want to leave you speechless when you see what we can do for you. Until then…

Spirit of Flight Airshow

Published by Kevin under entertainment

I have been invited to watch the Spirit of Flight Airshow this weekend in Galveston, TX at the parent’s home of a friend. Their house backs up to Sydnor Bayou which looks across to where the event takes place. Why is this significant you ask? Because the plane’s flight paths take them directly in front (really the back) of their house. Now, isn’t that the coolest thing? You don’t go to the airshow… it comes to you!

Literally, the planes fly over the house at times. If you have never seen an airshow, you should. I will have to admit that last year was my first airshow and I now AM SPOILED rotten. It’s the only way to go. Her parents put on a feast of a barbecue, cold drinks (and adult beverages too), dessert, and a bathroom. What more could you ask for? Really?

Here are a few of the pictures that I took last year. If you get the chance, take in an airshow. You will have a real appreciation for people who learn how to fly. Up, up, up…. whoosh!

I think the weather is supposed to be awesome. Maybe I will get even better pictures this year!

In Search of Bluebonnets — Part 2

Published by Kevin under bluebonnets,portraits,travel

So April 19th arrives. My sister and her son, Logan, came by the house in the afternoon to take some portraits out in the country. Going northwest to Chapel Hill and Brenham in search of the last of the Bluebonnets. Along with my wife, Amy, we all packed up the vehicle and hit the road. Camera gear locked and loaded, we are hopeful…

To my sad surprise, most of the Bluebonnets came and went without our viewing them. We saw a few patches that were not nearly enough to take a picture. All the good spots that were visited in years past. Flat gone. But were a positive bunch, there must be at least ONE patch left, right?

Well we found the last one, I think, and it wasn’t all that spectacular. I took a few shots and then we moved on down the road. A little further. Then some more… well it then became a search for a “good spot” to take some pictures, with or without Bluebonnets. Thankfully, Logan was not bothered by this photographer’s frustration in finding a spot. We did find a nice stretch of road where the sun was falling nicely on a fence line and tree. Here’s Logan along the fence line.

Logan, maybe next year will play in fields of Bluebonnets.

In Search of Bluebonnets

Published by Kevin under bluebonnets,portraits,travel

So it’s bluebonnet season in Texas and I have been wanting to get out and take some pictures. My schedule has been to crazy lately and the earliest I can get away to the area that I like to go for bluebonnet pictures is April 19. Bummer! I am planning to take pictures of my nephew Logan. I want to capture some

The local News has been reporting a nice season and if interested, the official Bluebonnet Festival is located in Chappel Hill, TX. This city, along with neighbor Brenham, usually has excellent bluebonnets fields for capturing the essential Texas Springtime image. Here are a few of a session with Quinn last season.

Hopefully this year we will be just as fortunate in our search for the Bluebonnets.
